Exactly one year after their first visit the quartet from Rio is back for more, this time at the Bedroom in Shoreditch. Make sure you do not miss them this time around.

The first and only time Do Amor played in London it was a small affair at Notting Hill Arts Club on a night promoted by Movimientos – and accordingly to those who survived to tell the story (a few among the JungleDrums crowd) it was a hell of a concert. Exactly one year after their first visit they are back for more, this time at the Bedroom. The venue is still small which will guarantee the great atmosphere and to get you as close as possible to the crazy sounds that come from the instruments of Marcelo Callado and Ricardo Dias Gomes – drummer and bass player in Cê, Caetano’s band, respectively – plus the guitar players Gabriel Bubu and Gustavo Benjão. The quartet went to school together and the name, Do Amor (From Love, in English), couldn’t be more appropriate. Completely independent, the band released their first album in 2010, but are very well known by the carioca’s. They’ve been playing in Rio for the last few years with many different Brazilian artists and last year started playing their own gigs, always packed by a curious crowd that almost always end up amazed by the band. This time promoted by the Palm City crew and Fernanda Rabelo, the latter a londoner and huge enthusiast of the new and interesting sounds from her home country, Do Amor are sure to surprise the crowd with their unique sound, made of eclectic influences ranging from Carimbo’ to Manchester Rock mixed with an exciting 21st Century Brazilian sound. The band will then perform at the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival. This year the event returns with a wonderful array of theatre, dance, world and classical music shows. Brazil vibrant culture is a key theme for the 2012 festival with lots of fantastic Brazilian artists, conversations, workshops and some Brazilian film premières. Do Amor are scheduled to wrap up the festival finale at the Party in the Close on the 9th June. ____________________________ Friday 8th June, 8pm Do Amor @ BEDROOM 62 Rivington Street Shoreditch London EC2A 3AY bedroom-bar.co.uk | 0207 739 5706 Saturday, 9th June Do Amor @ Salisbury Festival www.salisburyfestival.co.uk | 0845 241 9651

Launch night for Jandira Silva’s first album under her own name. Born in Rio de Janeiro, grown up in Espirito Santo and hugely popular in Portugal before moving to London five years ago, Jandira is a Brazilian singer that we more than lucky to have here in London.

Her new album includes samba, baiao, a good dose of jazz and a mixture of covers and originals, proving she is not content simply singing other people’s material. Jandira will be joined by a terrific Brazilian band that features the wonderful pianist John Crawford and the great Uruguayan guitarist Guille Hill. For this event she will be performing a mix of classic Brazilian songs with some of her own excellent originals. Expect plenty of fun and some Surprise Guests. One of Europe’s leading exponents of classic Brazilian Music. Highly recommended.

BIG East London warehouse party coming up on Friday 20th April. Arranged by Soundway Records to celebrate their 10th anniversary and promote two recent releases by Los Miticos del Ritmo and Batida, the party promises to be a tropical fiesta of the highest order.

The big news regarding this event is the fact that this will be the first UK appearance from Los Miticos Del Ritmo, the new project led by Will “Quantic” Holland, and that will feature a mixture of Colombian and UK musicians for this performance. The band will be playing music from their new self-titled album, a mixture of original music and some very unlikely covers, as this audio clip shows:

Also performing live will be Batida, Soundway’s latest singing and their first release of new music. We reviewed his recent debut album here and loved the mix of traditional and modern Angolan and Portuguese influences. If his debut London show – featuring MCs, VJ, live samples and percussion – is anywhere near as incendiary as his album this will be one hell of a show!

Rouding off the night will be DJ sets from Soundway Records boss Miles Cleret, Sofrito’s Frankie Francis and Quantic too, keeping the tropical madness going until first light. This is a party not to be missed!

Madredeus‘ songs have a powerful musicality, enriched and influenced by traditional music, strongly linked to the Portuguese people and culture. My first memory of the group goes back to 1990 with “O Pastor”, a song so emotionally intense that one gets goose bumps with such melancholic lyrics that talk about the past and dreams in the marvelous voice of former singer Teresa Salgueiro.

The songs are haunting, deeply inspired by the Portuguese saudade, an untranslatable word that expresses a sense of loss, laconic but at the same time full of beauty. A true icon of the Portuguese music scene, their music is an invitation to a relaxing and fulfilling experience of poetic and nostalgic lyrics.

With 14 albums released, a film soundtrack and a collaboration with the famous Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, the Madredeus have become a worldwide acclaimed band – even after the departure of singer Teresa Salgueiro in 2007.

They are now back in London to celebrate 25 years with Essência, a new album out this week that looks back at their carrer, and a European tour with a very special show featuring highlights from the group’s rich catalogue.

The Barbican welcomes leader Pedro Ayres Magalhães – who plays classical guitar - and the group with their powerful, modern and hypnotic sounds inspired by the Portuguese fado. “Madredeus songs are to be played live and this new show has been well received”, said Pedro Ayres Magalhães recently. “We missed playing live and almost half of the 13 songs on the album are part of the show we are touring”

A show not-to-be-missed and a celebration of the group’s return with their new album and a new addition to the band: the amazing voice of Beatriz Nunes in addition to the usual violins, cellos, keyboards, classical guitar and strings.

Gilles Peterson wants to prove he still loves Brazil with a new night at Guanabara, showing that even though he has spent a lot of his time lately flirting with Cuba, he still loves Brazil.

Gilles Peterson wants to prove he still loves Brazil with a new night at Guanabara

The last time Mr Peterson went to Brazil it was Rio not São Paulo where he spent his time. He was booked to DJ at a private party to promote Britain in Dilma’s country (and consequently, to make the ginger Prince dance while sipping caipirinhas) on the top of one of Rio de Janeiro’s postcards, the Sugar Loaf.

But that was not enough and some of his local friends put on a party the next day at a small place in Lapa, the city’s bohemian neighborhood. Jungle was there and although it was the wrong venue (terrible sound-system and dance floor) the former BBC Radio 1 DJ (he left last month if you hadn’t heard) tried to show that even though he has spent a lot of his time lately flirting with Cuba, he still loves Brazil.

So it is appropriate that he is helping to kick-start SP #Feelings, a new night at Guanabara, and also helping to raise money for ABC Trust, an NGO that supports vulnerable street kids in Brazil

Helping him is Marina Gasolina, former Bonde do Role lead singer and now a London resident (check out her new project Madrid with former CSS member Adriano Cintra here soundcloud.com/madridmusic) and resident DJ Limão spinnig the latest Brazilian tunes.

The press release promises it will feel like a night in São Paulo. “The economic heart of Brazil is also the main nightlife hotspot, world famous for its clubs, busy 7 nights a week and always going till late. The top weekend’s resident DJs spin an ‘all night Brazilian party’ classic dancefloor rhythms, that make Brazilian music famous worldwide”, it says. Let’s just hope it does not bring also São Paulo traffic jam’s to Holborn.
