In the historic Olympic year the festival returns with extraordinary surprises that will take over the streets of Greenwich and East London. One of the highlights of the event is the incredible and epic re-interpretation of the Greek myth with Prometheus Awakes.

The project was developed by the talented and worldwide renowned Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus along with Graese, the inventive disabled-led theatre group. The amazing structure will light up the skies and wonder the eyes of the audience with such a spectacular visual show.

Ahead of carnival season comes V&A’s Friday Late: Hot Brazil on 27th January, celebrating the energy and ingenuity of Brazil through art, music, dance and plenty more from the likes of Paraíso School of Samba, Braziliality and João Brasil.

Each visitor can take home a specially-commissioned artwork by Brazilian artist Bruno 9Li (whose work is pictured above) and take part in a samba flash mob in the Grand Entrance, with dancers from the Paraíso School of Samba. London-based collective Braziliality will produce a telenovela soap opera entitled The Adventures of Vitoria & Alberto in Brasil which will star visitors as its cast and will be transmitted live in the Museum.

Brazilian design studio Flour will create a giant table football game where visitors can compete for prizes and Rio de Janerio-based practice Super Uber will be at the Museum with their digital installation game which takes inspiration from Pelé. Curitiba-born, London-based illustrator Clayton Junior will host a workshop in which visitors can stencil their own ‘Brazilian Modernist’ designs on to canvas bags to take home. Further highlights include screenings of Jared Levy’s Grafitti Fine Art a film exploring the street art of Sao Paulo and Waste Land, an award-winning documentary about communities living at the world’s largest land-fill in Rio de Janeiro, by Lucy Walker.

Stuart Baker, author and founder of London record label Soul Jazz, will present a selection of Brazilian album covers, discussing the stories behind them. There will also be specially-commissioned installations around the Museum, panel discussions, caipirinhas, food and music from DJ, musician, and producer João Brasil.

The Last Humanists will explore for the first time the relationship between two seminal figures in twentieth-century design, Lina Bo Bardi and Gio Ponti.

Lina Bo Bardi (1914–1992), best known for the buildings she designed and built in Brazil – the House of Glass (1950–51), Museum of Art in São Paulo (1957–68), the Sesc Pompéia (1977–86), amongst others – was a prolific designer, architect, writer and curator, deeply committed to the promotion of the social and cultural potential of architecture. Before adopting Brazil as her home country in the late 1940s, Bo Bardi lived in Milan, where she collaborated with the renowned architect Gio Ponti (1891–1979). Ponti is perhaps better known as the founding editor of the celebrated design magazine Domus. Like Bo Bardi, he was a productive architect, designer, writer and curator, having designed the famous Pirelli Tower in Milan (1950), and collaborated with a number of renowned designers (Piero Fornasetti, Pier Luigi Nervi, amongst others) as well as organising many editions of the Milan Triennial exhibition of the decorative arts.

Curated by Ana Araujo, AA tutor and founder of the Travesia Institute, this exhibition will focus on the crossovers between Bo Bardi’s and Ponti’s approaches to design. It will include drawings, artefacts, film footage and writings covering the work of both architects, as well as a specially commissioned selection of contemporary photographs of Bo Bardi’s buildings by Barcelona-based photographer Iñigo Bujedo Aguirre.

An exhibition bringing together work from two photographers – Sebastião Salgado and Per Anders Pettersson – that highlight the Amazon region and it’s people. The exhibition is in support of Sky Rainforest Rescue.

Sebastião Salgado presents previously unseen work from his ongoing photographic essay Genesis – portraying landscapes in their most pristine state, and the communities still living in them, according to ancient traditions in balance with nature.

In contrast, Per Anders Pettersson presents photographs documenting a recent visit to Acre, North-West Brazil with actress Gemma Arterton, to support Sky Rainforest Rescue. These images illustrate the stark reality, and level of devastation, caused by deforestation – and give an insight into the progress being made through Sky Rainforest Rescue, which sees Sky and WWF working closely with the Acre State Government to protect this precious part of the world.
