Argentine Film Comes to London

Argentine cinema is on the rise! Just take the Oscar triumph of The Secret In Their Eyes as example of this. So, the arrival of the first ever Argentine Film Festival in London this April couldn’t come at a better time.

Taking place from Thursday 19th April until Sunday 22nd at the Ritzy in Brixton, the 1st Argentine Film Festival of London showcases the latest in Argentine cinema – as well as a couple of nods to the country’s film history. Opening the festival will be Chinese Take-Away, a heart-warming comedy starring Ricardo Darín (star of The Secret In Their Eyes). There will be three films that gained many admirers at the BFI London Film Festival last year, those being Las Acacias, Back To Stay and Medianeras, all of which we’ve seen and highly recommend.

Additionally, there will be Los Caprichosos de San Telmo, a documentary about murga full of some amazing real-life characters; the hugely original love story Absent; The Last Summer of La Boyita, which is billed as being much more than just a coming-of-age story; director’s showcase The Mugger; as well as a night showing Argentine silent films from the 1920s. All in all, it looks like a great few days for cinema and/or Argentina lovers!

Premiere: Nostalgia For The Light

Meet Patricio Guzmán (Battle For Chile, Salvador Allende, The Pinochet Case), one of the legends of documentary following this London premiere screening. This visionary masterpiece for our time is set in Chile’s Atacama Desert. There, people search the past to understand the present: while women comb through the sands for remains of loved ones “disappeared” by the Pinochet regime, astronomers peer into the cosmos to solve the riddle of beginning of life.

This is the London Premiere of Nostalgia For The Light.

Legendary filmmaker Patricio Guzman will be present for a Q&A following the screening.

Movimientos Presents Esperando el Tsunami

Continuing a regular night at Rich Mix, Movimientos presents a fresh programme of exceptional documentary film and unparalleled live music. On this occasion joining forces with Sounds and Colours to present an official UK screening of Esperando El Tsunami an epic new visual and musical documentary from Colombia.

The film documents Colombian folktronica duo Lulacruza as they journey across Colombia with celebrated independent film-maker Vincent Moon. The idea behind their journey was a to discover Colombia, and especially the music, documenting that experience in the form of a new album and a film as they composed and created on the road.

The screening will be complemented by performances from special guest musicians (TBA)

Las Acacias

The first feature film from Argentine director Pablo Giorgelli has been a huge success. Las Acacias won the Caméra d’Or (Best First Film) at the 2011 Cannes Festival, the New Horizons Prize at San Sebastian and the Sutherland Award for Best Debut Feature at the London Film Festival recently.

The film is a slow-moving drama about truck driver Ruben and the mother and daughter that he agrees to give a lift all the way to Buenos Aires. What makes the film so special is the relationship that begins between the three main characters, with almost all of their relationship developing within the confines of the truck’s cabin. The fact that Giorgelli is able to entrance the audience while using so little plot or change of scenery is one of the reasons that this film has been receiving so many plaudits.

Movimientos Live Presents Our Latin Thing

Movimientos will be celebrating the release of Our Latin Thing on DVD by joining forces with Shook magazine and Strut records to screen this salsa classic at Notting Hill Arts Club, where it will be followed by the normal Movimientos mix of live Latin music and DJs.

Our Latin Thing is the definitive document of Latino life in New York in the early 70s. Directed by Leon Gast (When We Were Kings), the film focuses on a live performance by Fania All Stars – including the likes of Ray Barreto, Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon – at the Cheetah night club, but also steps onto the streets giving a unique insight into the meeting of New York and Puerto Rican cultures at this time.

The film screening will be followed by one of London’s most prominent salsa bands Palenke Trio, who will be dropping a selection of Fania classics into their set. Plus there will be a special guest, DJ Vince Vella fresh from performing with Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Band.

Cocaine Unwrapped

Screening of Cocaine Unwrapped, a new documentary about cocaine. The film follows the trail of the drug through the coca farmers in Bolivia and Colombia, the drugs mules in Ecuadorian prisons, and the street dealers in Mexico, to the consumers in the USA and UK.

This one-off screening at Curzon Soho will feature a post-screening Q&A with director Rachel Seifert, War on Want’s international programmes director, Graciela Romero, and the UK’s former deputy drugs czar, Mike Trace.
