VAMOS to the north-east!

VAMOS festival doesn’t like to do things lightly, which is why their line-up for 2011 looks so daunting on paper. Music, film, dance, carnival, education and Mexican wrestling spread out over 37 days across the north-eastern cities of Newcastle and Gateshead.

If you’ve ever wondered what the North-East of England is like then now is probably the time to find out. If you are interested in heading up that way on a weekend there are three clear opportunities. The first is for the opening Tyne Carnival on Saturday 4th June, which will feature groups such as Rumba NE, Dale Burundanga, Meze Mundo, World Beaters Music Samba Band, Newcastle University Salsa Band and Sports for Youth Academy, with the parade continuing into the afternoon at the Green Festival. In the night there will be a showing of the great animated Cuban love story Chico & Rita (pictured below), a live set from Jesús Cutiño & Son de Cuba and more Latin music into the night.

Another action packed day at VAMOS is Saturday 18th June. There will be all-day zumba and tango classes (pictured below) at Crisis Skylight Cafe, free live music from Matias Aguayo, Capracara and Vamanos, a screening of the Mexican film Como Agua Para Chocolate (“Like Water for Chocolate”) where audience members will be fed the same food that the actors are indulging in on screen, and Venezuela’s explosive Bacalao Men in the Latin Garden.

Finishing off the festival will be another good weekend with the closing party featuring Cuba’s Roberto Poveda and the Mouth of the Tyne festival bringing Spain’s much heralded Fuel Fandango to these shores. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday in July (the 10th to be exact).

Other interesting events are the series of films being shown at the Star and Shadow Cinema. We are particularly excited about Birdwatchers on June 16th, a documentary telling the story of the Guarani people and their struggles against landowners in the southern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

VAMOS will be also be bringing mexican wrestling, in the shape of Lucha Future, to Gateshead, for an evening of classic japes. There will also be live music from Bostich & Fussible (Nortec Collective) for this event, making it a whole night worth not to be missed.
