Post-Mortem

Pablo Larraín (Tony Manero) returns with the second installment in his trilogy exploring the political turmoil and violence of post-Allende Chile. Post Mortem revolves around Mario (Tony Manero’s Alfredo Castro again), a mortician who, on the day of Pinochet’s military coup against socialist president Salvador Allende, finally decides to act on his long-suppressed longing for his neighbour, an aging erotic dancer, Nancy.

As tanks roll through the city, and protestors throng the streets, Mario’s self-absorbed, borderline psychotic, drive for Nancy’s affections reflects own Pinochet’s sociopathic will to power. Mario’s instability, just as in Tony Manero, mirrors that of the country’s political and moral turmoil. Tense, enigmatic, funny and disturbing in equal measure, Mario haunts every frame of Post Mortem. Larraín’s visual style, all ‘scope widescreen, creeping close-ups, and off-kilter architectural compositions delivers a stunning tense thriller.
