JD & Mr Bongo launch Sons of Cuba DVD
Hailed by critics, Andrew Lang’s powerful and moving award-winning documentary Sons of Cuba is a stunning insight behind the scenes of Castro’s Cuba into the lives of a group of young boys; hand-picked amateur boxers training to become champions of their country.
Sons of Cuba follows the stories of three young hopefuls at the legendary Havana Boxing Academy during their excruciating training regime over eight months as they prepare for the Cuba’s national boxing championship for under 12s, coinciding with the most significant period of political transition in Cuba in the last 50 years.
For them, and Cuba, boxing is not just a sport. It is a chance to become a national hero, a symbol of Cuba, as well as a way of bettering their lives. The boys endure a gruelling regime. Lang notes, “You’re not sure if the audience is going to be impressed or horrified with what the kids are going through.“
Sons of Cuba is at once intimate, personal and political, delving deep into the heart and mind of modern Cuba, while documenting a country at a moment of historic change. This event will celebrate its DVD release on Mr Bongo Flims on 20th September, featuring a screening of the film, Q&A with director Andrew Lang and music from DJ John Armstrong and Tumbao Tivoli.
