Susana Baca @ Jazz Cafe
Susana Baca has risen to prominence outside of her native Peru as one of shining lights in the resurgence of Afro-Peruvian music. Yet, she is increasingly becoming known as simply a great singer, one who is capable of interpreting a wide array of material with an effortless grace. She will be performing at the Jazz Cafe as part of Fuerza London.
The popularity of Afro-Peruvian music had fallen throughout the 70s and 80s with only Peru Negro really keeping the flame burning. However, the resurgence of Susana Baca, along with the popularity of Eva Ayllon, has ensured that people have finally come to hear this beautifully deep, imaginative music.
In recent years Baca has played with a wide variety of musicians including Marc Ribot and John Medejski, as well as some of the finest Peru has to offer. She has already released an incredible 10 albums since 1997. This is in addition to setting up the Instituto Negrocontinuo (Black Continuum Institute), an institute based in Peru for protecting Afro-Peruvian culture.
Susana Baca will be promoting songs from her new Afrodiaspora album, which is being released internationally by Luaka Bop. You can read our review of Afrodiaspora here.
