Preview: Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards @ Koko

Mr Peterson and friends return to the Koko on January 22nd with another stellar line-up for the 2011 edition of the Awards – Jungle’s going so watch out for the review..

GP’s eclectic Radio 1 show has been bringing new music from around the world to the nation’s ears for over a decade now, and his tastemaker status has helped to break a diverse range of acts, from the Cinematic Orchestra to Seu Jorge.

For regular listeners of the show, the awards ceremony is a chance to honour the artists and DJs who’ve come to the fore in the last 12 months. For everyone else, it’s an early chance to catch bands and DJs who are bound to be going on to bigger and better things before long.

The most intriguing name on this year’s line-up is James Blake, the much-hyped young producer who was named runner-up in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. With a handful of weird and wonderful dubstep releases under his belt already, Blake gained fame late last year with his jaw-dropping cover of Feist’s

Blake’s former bandmates Mount Kimbie and ‘folktronica’ hero Four Tet also play live, with DJ support from Turkish force-of-nature Ahu, Berlin’s Scuba and, of course, Gilles himself. If past years are anything to go by, there are bound to be some pretty special guests, too.

Advance tickets are already sold out, so be sure to get yourself down early on the night to beat the Camden queues.
