The count down is on to one of the hottest events of the summer as a slice of Ibiza comes to Clapham Common at the weekend long music festival South West Four.
Ahead of the event JD got the chance to chat to Igor Cavalera, best known as the former drummer for Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura. Now one half of duo Mixhell, which he founded with his wife, he takes to the stage on Aug 29th.
First of all: Igor, are you going to be bringing your drums to the show at SW4?
Yes… most of the shows, especially the festivals we are doing with me on the live drums and Laima controlling the cdjs and synths.
Have you played with any artist before that’s playing at the festival?
It is always a pleasure to share the stage with friends like Boysnoize or Erol Alkan. We are really excited about this line up!
How do you split your time between Cavalera Conspiracy and Mixhell?
Actually it is very relaxed, as me and Max have our personal main projects going on all the time (Soulfly & Mixhell respectively). We just find great excuses to be with our families on tour and play shows together.
You played at Skol Beats in Brazil and at some parties in São Paulo, where have you been since then?
We’ve been mad busy in the last years touring, mainly in Europe, and also spent a lot of time in the studio. But most important of all having fun with our music!
You must have played with a lot of interesting people around the world, but who was the best in your opinion?
I can name a few favourites…. Soulwax, LCD Soundsystem, Buraka Som Sistema,Turbo Trio.
What do you never travel without?
Patience, Nintendo DS and of course my beautiful wife!
What can you say about the boys of Jamaica and the video clip you did together?
They are very talented new band from Paris and great friends too. It was lots of fun working with the Surface to Air crew which also did the Cavalera Conspiracy video for Sanctuary. It’s a friend/family relationship.
What did you think of Glastonbury?
It is the coolest festival in the world! Massive, with a variety of culture. We love it!! Everybody used to say we couldn’t miss it, and now we understand why!
How did São Paulo fashion week go, and what are your plans for your ‘Cavalera’ fashion label for the future?
I sold my partnership in the brand and today we only participate on other projects together.
(I assure you I’m no stalker but) I clocked you wandering around Portobello Road – which is your favourite place in London?
We love London!! We always made our home base in Europe in London. I have to say my favourite places are: Hyde park to chill with the family, Carnaby st. for shopping, Nando’s for fast food & Fabric for the best clubbing on the planet!
