Beat it like a baiano
Beat the blues this weekend: learn about Brazilian percussion, particularly how it links up with other instruments, and watch vibrant music, all at once. The Letieres Leite Quintet, an afro-jazz group from the historic state of Bahia, have reached the UK for the first time, and they offering free drumming workshops and performances.
The Quintet has already arrived in the UK, where they will perfom and conduct lessons this weekend and early next week. There will be a “masterclass” at 11:00 this Sunday at the British Music Experience/O2 (click here for directions), followed by a performance at the Freestage (at the Barbican, click here). They will be opening for Milton Nascimento and Siba, who are playing at 20:00 (click here). The event at the O2 has a small fee.
“The classes are the highlight of the tour. The masterclass will also feature United Vibrations, a well-known UK band that mixes jazz, dub and ska. We are expected to come up with two new pieces during the session. I’m very happy and excited”, said the maestro Letieres Leite.
The youth workshop will take place at the Harris Academy in Greenwich on Monday, October 21st, organised in conjunction with Midi Music Company.
Wozzy Brewster, the executive director of the Company told Jungledrums: “we are delighted to welcome the Letieres Leite Quinteto for this exciting exchange of Jazz infused Afro-Brazilian rhythms. We hope that the creative opportunities provide inspiration for aspiring young musicians, as well as established composers, producers, instrumentalists and singers.
