Samba
The ultimate symbol of the identity of Brazilian music, samba bears roots in African dances and was developed from Bahian samba rodas (in a round), with the Afro-Brazilian style frequently associated to capoeira. Part of Brazilian Cultural Heritage, samba as it is widely known today was born in Rio, in 1917, and from this came spin-off variations of the style such as samba de gafiera, partido alto and pagode. The essential sound is basically made with string and percussive instruments.

Lambada + Zouk
Lambada appeared in the north of Brazil during the 1970s. As with salsa, it also derives from a fusion of styles such as guitarrada (a genre from Pará), merengue and cumbia. Becoming popular in the latter years of the 80s, the style continues to be revitalized through its fusion with zouk, a musical genre from the French West Indies which means ‘party’. The originated style, lambada zouk, also known as Brasilian zouk, is a bit slower than traditional lambada and isn’t danced exclusively to the rhythm of zouk.

Forró
The word ‘forró’ derives from the term forrobodó, which in the African language Bantu means arrasta-pé, farra (‘one hell of a party’). Originally, it was used to describe a party at which rhythms from the northeast such as baião and xote were played, and eventually came to be the name of the musical rhythm too. It became popular in the 1950s and has as its traditional line up of musicians an accordion, a triangle and a zabumba (a type of drum).

Salsa
In Spanish, salsa means ‘spice’. The Cuban rhythm, emerging in the 1960s, has its origens in ‘son cubano’, mambo and Afrocaribbean rumba, bomba and plena from Porto Rico, but also took influence from merengue, cumbia and jazz, and today allows in a vast mixture of sounds to create the rhythm. Wind instruments are the highlight of a salsa band.
