The Alternative Wedding
Don’t you just love it when having Royalty makes a difference? Only the Royals could arrange an extra bank holiday right after Easter, guaranteeing us two long weekends in the sun. Also giving us the excuse to get all anti-establishment and plot loads of alternative wedding plans, ones that don’t involve talking about dresses!
There are a ridiculous amount of activities happening around London on Royal Wedding Day Friday 29th April (as it’s official title now is). These are a few of our suggestions, ones with a bit of Latin flavour or simply the kind of events that never happen, and probably won’t happen again until little Harry pulls his finger out.
This is the one we’re most excited about! Cargo have arranged a marathon 14 hour party, featuring live music from Molotov Jukebox and Fuel Fandango, a Flamenco room, a list of DJs as long as my arm and a BBQ thrown into the deal. All for just £13 advance or £15 on the door!
The Cargo Block Party will start at 1pm in the afternoon and finish at 3am.
Land of Kings
On both Thursday 28th and Friday 29th there will be some royal happenings at Dalston’s Land of Kings festival. From 6pm until late on both days there will be basement parties, rooftop all-dayers, film showcases, secret banquets, dead royal do cabearet, cutting edge video installations, pop-up cafes and underground gaming dens. In short, it looks like it should be fun.
Some of the acts involved include 2manydjs, Brassroots, Django Django, D/R/U/G/S, Ghostpoet and Ragga Twins. There are a few 2-day tickets still available at £19 each, as well as some single-day tickets, though you will have to be quick!
Royal Wedding Street Party
Now I have to admit that when I read Street Party I was thinking carnival, samba, caipirinha… Unfortunately none of those are involved. This is an English style street party. The kind of street party that involves a Chas n Dave tribute act, a vintage clothes fayre and bunting. Don’t dismiss this one yet though. Brassroots will be blowing the place up with their brass-ified party classics and Swing Patrol will, ya know, give you a reason to indulge in a bit of swing!
The Royal Wedding Street Party will be taking place on Leonard Street from 10.30am until 5pm. It will be followed by a party at The Book Club until 2am. You will need a wristband to attend these events. These will be available on the morning of the party so you might have to get down there quick!
The Liberty of Norton Folgate
The East End Film Festival is definitely one for an eclectic line-up. We’re already excited about their Movie MayDay on the Monday Bank Holiday, but now we can add The Liberty of Norton Holgate to our list of things to do. This is an event all about discovering London’s heritage. Norton Folgate was an area of London that managed to liberate itself from the laws of the time, resulting in a spate of debauchery and lawlessness that would make Genghis Khan blush!
The event runs from 11am until 11pm at The Water Poet in London’s East End. There will be a horse-drawn procession with jugglers and conjurers, old music hall acts, ales, pies and preserves on the menu, and screens set-up all over the area to tell the story of Norton Folgate and the crazy things people are doing on this day in it’s name. This event is FREE!
Royal Wedding All Nighter at Apollo Cinema
Starting at 11pm on Thursday 28th April, and part of the Sci-Fi London Film Festival, this is almost seven hours of non-stop sci-fi action. What better way to celebrate the wedding of a royal eh? The evening will start with Buck Fizz at 11pm, with the 1st film starting at 11.30pm. The films being shown are Bride Of The Gorilla, The Corpse Vanishes, I Married A Witch, Bride Of The Monster And Bride Of Frankenstein. What more do you want?
